Another loose cannon gone bipolar…
One of Folk’s Caucasian cousins today mistakenly stepped into the proverbial stereotypical world of Oh Sh!t when they made the mistake of questioning Folk’s choice of music.
See Folk was rocking some alternative and rock music on the iPhone and my Caucasian cousin inquired “Who is that you’re listening to?”
“Chevelle” Folk responded.
At that point, they decided that they wanted to smear the stereotypical sh!t on their face so they continued, “Do you listen to them often?”
“One of Folk’s favorite bands currently” with glee Folk commented.
Look of confusion sets in on their face. Without hesitation, they proceed to jump into the pool of “I like sh!t for dinner and rubbed on my genitals” for full effect and stated, “I didn’t see you as the type to listen to alternative rock music.”
“Well what music did you think Folk listened too? Black Folk music?”
At that point they knew they had found themselves in the valley of “faux pas snakes in my azz”. They begin to apologize, at which Folk advise no need. Folk wasn’t offended. Folk warned that they might want to consider the hidden stereotypes they hide within themselves regarding others that don’t fit a predefined “mold.”
The point of this post is that a lot of Black Folks listen to Alternative and Rock music, however the mainstream media has convinced a nation of people that Black people are one dimensional and only listen to… Black folks music (forms of Rap, R&B, and Gospel). That’s Bullsh!t. Hell, a lot of the samples that find themselves in “Black Folks Music” is often a derivative of Alternative Rock, and lately of east India origin.
To my Caucasian cousins and my BETistic nieces and nephews, there are a lot of Black folks that listen to other styles of music. Folk speaks regularly with other “black folks” at the ol office regarding some of the bands that we listen to and like. Linkin Park is one of Folk’s favorite bands, but also listens to Breaking Benjamin, Flyleaf, Audioslave, Switchfoot, Korn, Three Days Grace just to name a few. And if you’re a fan of Rock Music and happen to have some melanin in your skin, then check out the peeps over at Afro-Punk.
Turn up your stereos this week with the windows down to announce to all these fvckers (Caucasian and our BETistic nieces and nephews) that music is for all people regardless of color.
Oh and the title, that’s verse one opening lyrics to Sound of Madness by Shinedown. The photo? Living Color from the 80′s.
Fvck what people think, who’s your favorite alternative or rock band and who y’all listening to? …and Rock On Y’all!
